Lesson 1: Critical Reading and Summary Writing—Foundations for Course Success

Preview of Lesson 1 Assignment

This is a good point to look ahead and preview the requirements for the assignment you will be submitting for lesson 1. When you go to the lesson 1 assignment in the Assignments section of Oncourse, you will see the following description of the assignment you will submit for a grade in this lesson:

This will be the assignment you will submit for a grade in lesson 1. You are to write a summary of “Let’s Tell the Story of All America’s Cultures” by Yuh Ji-Yeon. Your summary should mention her main arguments as well as the important examples and evidence that she offers in support of her assertions. Your written summary must be independent of Yuh’s exact language. This means you should put her ideas in your own words, and avoid using quotations in your summary. Your summary should be approximately one-fourth to one-third the length of the original article. Double-space your summary in twelve point Times New Roman font and save it in a .doc or .rtf file named “lesson 1 summary.”

In the sections that follow, I will give more detailed guidelines for writing an effective summary, and will share a sample summary to highlight some of the features you will need to incorporate in your own work.
